HALDANE OUT-I-TORIUM Student Designed Outdoor Classroom

March 6, 2020 @ 4:00 pm March 15, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

The Haldane Out-i-Torium is a student project to create a new outdoor classroom on the Haldane campus. Students are engaged in the design process through site-analysis, sensory mapping and design of the new outdoor classroom.  The location, topography, trees, rocks, and views are features that lend themselves to a very special type of flexible outdoor classroom that can accommodate broad, interdisciplinary and place-based outdoor lessons: from science, math, geography, geology to history, literature, poetry, and the visual and performing arts!

This exhibition shows the students’ work in:

Site Analysis: Sensory Mapping, Measuring the Site and Slope

Research: Local Geology & Landmarks, Ecological Plant Communities

Design: Sketching in Plan and Section, Building a Topographical Model, Photo-Collage Renderings & Planting Design

The students are making real-world observations and asking thoughtful questions that will inform their designs: What can we do to mitigate habitat destruction? How will water drain? Can natural materials like rocks be used to retain the soil & provide seating? What is the best form to create a flat area for learning: carving-out or projecting-off the hillside? They have built study models, assembled collages, & sketched and written and presented their ideas.

The work is ongoing and will continue throughout the spring and summer. Thanks to the volunteer designers, the Haldane School Foundation our teachers and administrators for supporting hands-on, place-based, real-world learning opportunities like these!

Please join us to view the student work & be inspired! Donations to help fund this project can be made via the Haldane School Foundation.

Haldane Out-i-Torium Student Design Exhibit will be on view at 44 Main Street March 6-15 Opening Friday March 6, 4-7PM
